  1. Is chiropractic care comfortable?

  2. The approaches we use are gentle, safe and effective.  Patients find that modern chiropractic care is comfortable and relieving.

  1. Is chiropractic care addictive?

  2. No.  The purpose of chiropractic care is to correct the problems being address in a safe and natural way.  However, some problems cannot be fully cured because of permanent damage, and in these cases some extended chiropractic care can be helpful.  Ongoing care or follow-up care may be recommended, but it is always up to each person to decide what is best for their health going forward.

  3. We have many patients that follow-up with us periodically for new injuries, new pain problems, recurrent issues, are of tension or strain, or for general health purposes.

  5. Is chiropractic care recognized by the general health care community?

  6. Yes.  Chiropractic is the third largest healing profession, focusing on natural health solutions.  We have close relationships with medical providers in our area.  We regularly see patients referred by their medical providers for chiropractic care, rehab and therapy services, and massage therapy. 

  1. How is ProActive Spine Care different that other chiropractors in the Tacoma area?

  2. We focus on being the absolute best chiropractic and functional care clinic in Tacoma, University Place, Fircrest, and South Puget Sound area.  We have over 25 years of care experience to help you, along top qualified chiropractors and therapists.  Dr. McMillin, the WA State Chiropractor of the Year 2013 and recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements, has pioneered innovative care directions now in use around the country.  He also regularly instructs other chiropractors and care providers in continuing education, a position that demands a working knowledge and application of the latest research.  

  3. It is not common for us to see and help patients when other past directions have failed. Our approach it to be thorough in understanding the problems people are having, and design individual approaches that provide the best chances for a great result.  

Is chiropractic care just for back and neck problems?

  1. No!  Our patients are happy to know that we treat a full range of musculoskeletal conditions, including shoulder problems like rotator cuff injuries, carpal tunnel, hip and knee injuries, joint arthritis, balance issues and fall prevention, plantar fasciitis, headaches, TMJ problems, posture, athletic performance training, and post surgery rehab.  We are great at the natural care of necks, backs and the general musculoskeletal system. 

  2. People that receive chiropractic care have also been shown to be sick less often, use fewer medications, require surgical and diagnostic tests less often, and have less disability.  It is not common for us to have patients telling us they have more energy, sleep better, and feel generally healthy.

  1. Are there risks associated with chirorpactic care?

  2. Like all health care procedures, there are potential risks.  However, these risks are astoundingly low.  For example, there is far greater risk associated with taking over the counter anti-inflammatory medication than are associated chiropractic adjustments.  Risks of spinal manipulation and chiropractic care have been the subject of many national and international studies and reviews, and chiropractic has been repeatedly validated for its safety. 

  1. Can I have chiropractic care if I have had spine surgery?

  2. Yes.  Care may need to be modified for the particular post-surgical condition, but we have helped many people recover from spine surgery, and also help them take steps to prevent another spine surgery in the future.  

  1. Can I refer friends or family for chiropractic care or massage therapy?

  2. Yes!  We love seeing friends and family referred by our current patients.  We take care to give the best care possible.  

  1. Is chiropractic care safe for children and seniors?

  2. Yes.  We help children recover from injuries, muscle and joint problems, and improve growth and athletic performance.  We provide thorough scoliosis screenings.  On the other end of the spectrum, we help seniors with arthritis, posture problems, aches and pains, balance and fall prevention.

  3. Children and seniors may require modified chiropractic and manual therapy approaches to suit body structure, age, and tolerance.

  1. INSURANCE QnA:

  2. Does health insurance cover chiropractic care?

  3. Most do.  We can help you determine the level of coverage for your plan.  We are participating providers for most regional insurance plans.   Work injuries and car accidents often have 100% coverage for reasonable and necessary care within coverage parameters.  Medicare also provides chiropractic care coverage.

  1. Does health insurance cover massage therapy and rehab services?

  2. Most do.  We can help you determine the level of coverage for your plan.

  3. What if insurance limits my chiropractic coverage?

  4. Our care coordination staff will help determine the extent of your coverage.  It is not uncommon for our staff to find areas of coverage you may not have known about.

  1. Does car accident insurance and workers compensation cover chiropractic care, rehab services  and massage therapy?

  2. Yes.  Care is covered when medically necessary and under policy parameters.

  3. Do I need a referral before I can get chiropractic care or massage therapy?

  4. No, you can see a chiropractor and a massage therapist in Washington State without a referral, but a referral be required for coverage by your insurance plan.  Consult your insurance plan to see how referrals apply to you.  If required, we can help you obtain a referral in many cases.  We will help you determine referral needs to access your coverage in advance. 

  5. Does Medicare cover massage?

  6. No.  Massage is a non-covered benefit in Medicare.

  7. How do I know if I have insurance coverage?

  8. Insurance benefits may be outlined several ways. Sometimes coverage can be misleading and appear more limited that it is.  It may be clearly described, or may be listed as a therapy benefit.  We can help you find out what coverage you have, if any. 

  9. What is a participating provider?

  10. Participating providers have a contractual agreement with your insurance company to provide care.  Coverage is usually better. We are preferred providers with many insurance plans. 

  1. Can I get care covered if the ProActive Spine Care does not participate with my plan?

  2. Often times there are out-of-network benefits available.  Our staff can help you determine what coverage options are available. 

  1. What are out-of-network benefits?

  2. Many insurance companies have coverage benefits at a lower coverage rate for providers that are not participating providers with that insurance company.

  3. Does ProActive Spine Care bill my insurance for me?

  4. Yes, we bill your insurance company as a courtesy. 

  5. What is my responsibility in understanding my insurance benefits?

  6. Regardless of our inquiry or what your insurance company has told us about your coverage, the  insurance coverage is based on a contract between you and your insurance company.  It is ultimately your responsibility to understand your own coverage.  Patients are always responsible for the care they receive.  

  7. What is an Independent Medical Examination, and what might it mean for my ability to access the care I need?

  8. Sometimes insurance companies (like car accident insurance) can require you to go to one of their own doctors for a second opinion on your condition.  They may use those opinions to drive coverage regardless of the thoroughness of that exam.  Our providers are fully trained in this process, and you can discuss with the doctor any concerns you have should you be required to undergo an Independent Medical Examination at the request of your insurance company. 

  9. Can I get massage therapy while I am also getting chiropractic or physical therapy care?

  10. Yes.  Massage therapy often enhances the results of your other treatments and works synergistically for better results. 

  11. Do I have a copay for my care?

  12. Maybe.  Copays are common and vary with the particular insurance plan.  Any copay is due at the time services are rendered. 

  13. What happens if my insurance doesn’t pay?

  14. Regardless of insurance processing, patients are ultimately responsible for payment for care rendered. 

  15. What information do you need to check my insurance?

  16. You will need to provide a copy of your insurance card which lists all required information. 

  17. What information do you need to bill my insurance?

  18. All required information is on your insurance card.  If the condition is injury related, we will also need a date of injury and verification of an open claim.  

  19. Can I bill my insurance myself?

  20. Yes.  We can provide you with the clinical information required to do so.  If you are billing your own insurance you will be required to make personal payment. 

  21. What if my insurance denies coverage? 

  22. If coverage is denied, you can appeal the denial decision. In some cases, legal help may be required, and complaints can be filed with the State Insurance Commissioner’s office.
