SPINE AS A PREDICTOR OF KNEE PROBLEMS:

There have been several research studies over recent years that confirm that poor movement control of the spine and pelvis/hip region are predictors of knee problems.  These studies have included younger athletes, and it is clear that poor central body control of the lower spine and pelvic region predict significant knee injuries like ACL tears, meniscus tears, and collateral ligament sprains.  Treatment of knee problems needs to include treatment of the spine and pelvic region, and should specifically focus on better movement control training.

NEW CONFIRMING RESEARCH LINKS SPINE AND KNEE TREATMENT:

New research out just out shows that rehabilitation of a knees problems needs to factor in rehabilitation of the spine and pelvic regions (aka, proximal regions). The British Journal of Sports Medicine (2015;49(21) 1365-1376) reported that after a review of high quality studies from 2014 acres a wide range of publications, there was strong evidence that proximal rehabilitation combined with local knee rehabilitation improved function, and decreased pain. The conclusion was that there is a robust body of work that shows that proximal rehabilitation should be included with conservative management for knee conditions.   This study surveys a condition called patellofemoral pain, a common knee pain problem, and combined with prior research findings from other studies, the support is very strong for a more comprehensive approach to knee rehabilitation, one that should include the spine, hip, and pelvic region.
